Few recall the last ball of the Ashes. That initial ball that's renowned. That wide that goes to the slips, that elegant shot for four, that wicket, shattering the stumps! Last balls? I had to research them. Moeen Ali slicing a drive behind to finish an innings loss in a meaningless match in 2015; Boyd Rankin being taken at slip off Harris, Boyd Rankin featuring in his single Test at the conclusion of a rapid downfall in a 5-0 whitewash that's been commonplace in 2014; a Steve Harmison rising delivery ricocheting away Justin Langer's shoulder for four leg byes, the sole boundary the Australian team achieve in a target they'll not undertake in 2005.

It separates between speculating how things will go, and knowing how they do. One thing's certain, there's no certainty there will be a successful conclusion. For the last decade, England's trips Down Under have ended in ashes, as opposed to with them. A loss by eight wickets to the Kiwis at Edgbaston, 157 runs to India at the the London ground, an innings and 14 runs to Australia at the MCG, A ten-wicket loss to West Indies in the scenic location.

England were thrashed by West Indies in the island in spring 2022 just before Joe Root stepped aside as leader.

By the final stage, after all those stretches of nasal swabs and isolation and controlled settings and repeated losses at the hands of each rival, they were just about the most miserable and careworn Test team the English cricket board had ever fielded to a cricket field. So much of what Ben Stokes and McCullum have done in the subsequent years was in reaction to all that, as well as the Stokes' experiences during his five-month break from the game in 2021 when he had suffered a bout of anxiety. It was created to make people recall that it was supposed to be fun, if it was supposed to be anything at all.

This continues to be the case now. Despite when the Ashes is on the line, and although the team have finally recognized that they need to be a somewhat adaptable in the way they go about performing. It is the English squad, too, that unexpectedly end up suffering a defeat in a Test by an innings defeat even though the rivals made a relatively low total; who concluded being defeated in one of the better Tests ever staged after making a confident decision in the first innings against the Black Caps, and then repeated the action against the Australian team; who were routed by a huge margin in the Indian city, and who were on the losing side of one of the island nation's most notable triumphs. Between them, they have secured some of the unlikeliest wins, endured some of the ugliest dismissals, made some of the most improbable hundreds, and secured some of the most surprising five-fers in the annals of English cricket.

However this historic contest shakes out, they have been, one after another, astonishing, preposterous, absurd, exasperating, and totally, unrepentantly, unapologetically enjoyable.
