Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
