Seven alleged members of German far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
